What are ultrafine (nano) bubbles?

An ultrafine bubble (nanobubble) is an extremely small bubble of gas suspended in liquid, far too small to see. A typical ultrafine bubble (nanobubble) is smaller than one micron, which is less than one thousandth of a millimeter. The size can be imagined this way. If a normal bubble in a fizzy drink were as big as a beach ball, an ultrafine bubble (nanobubble) would be smaller than a single grain of sand.

Because they are so small, ultrafine bubbles (nanobubbles) act very differently from both ordinary bubbles and microbubbles.

They do not float up and pop.

Ordinary bubbles, and even the larger microbubbles, rise to the surface and burst within seconds. An ultrafine bubble (nanobubble) is so light and so small that it stays floating inside the water for days, weeks, or even longer.

They help water hold much more gas.

This charge keeps the bubbles from joining together, which is one reason they can last such a long time.

They carry a small electric charge.

Ultrafine bubbles (nanobubbles) allow water to carry far more oxygen, or other gases, than it normally could.
